Surveying and reporting on structural defects
Discovering a possible structural defect in your home, a building you hope to purchase or a building you manage can be a very stressful experience. Our investigation and reporting services provide you with clarity on the possible implications of the suspected defects, and if appropriate, a plan of action for continued monitoring or remediation. If our report provides the Client with peace of mind and gives them the understanding required to make an informed decision on how to proceed, we consider it to be a job well done.

Design of structural alterations to your home
If you are planning to make structural changes to your home, we are able to provide assistance at every stage of the process, from early-stage advice on feasibility through to the production of detailed calculations and drawings for submission to building control. At every stage we take a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for construction cost savings or good value for money improvements to the proposals and clearly explain the trade-offs posed by these opportunities, so that you can be kept at the heart of the decision making process at each step of design development. We are happy to assist with projects of any size, from the removal of single walls to extensions of spectacular proportions.

Structural design for the housebuilding sector
Our team has many years' experience managing the structural design of projects for commercial housebuilders, from delivering detailed foundation and superstructure designs for large, multi-phase strategic sites of 1000+ plots to small sites of only a handful of plots. We also have experience advising on structural design strategy and policy at the highest level for one of the country's largest national housebuilders. We are leveraging our wealth of experience in this sector, combined with an innovative use of modern software development frameworks, to develop bespoke structural design software specifically for use in the housebuilding sector. We intend to use our software in-house to unlock industry-leading value engineering opportunities for our clients - watch this space for updates on the roll out of this software.

Structural design of steel elements, components and connections
We provide structural designs for bespoke steelwork components such as balustrades, staircases and support frames. We are often appointed directly by fabricators, fitout contractors or new tenants in commercial premises for these types of project.

Georges Moss
Director
Georges is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, specialising in structural engineering. A large proportion of his career has been spent providing structural design services to the housebuilding industry, but this has been well complemented by experience in a broad range of other sectors. He founded Tortoise Consulting Engineers to gain the freedom to innovate, create an environment where employees can thrive, and build a company based on sustainability, fairness, and reliability. Outside of work, Georges enjoys playing hockey and going for long walks in the Peak District with his partner and dog.
Charlie Lyth
Engineer
Charlie is a Graduate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, specialising in structural engineering. He has 4 years of design experience, with an interest in the housing sector, both above and below ground. He has a keen eye for detail and enjoys optimising design processes and solutions.
Outside of work, he enjoys running, playing hockey and beating Georges at squash – but he may need to let him win as it gets closer to his annual review!
